Review :

The future of our country is at stake, again.

The movie starts off well enough with a cheesy rock score by Anton Garcia Abril that leads into a cool psychedelic credit sequence but it's all downhill from there. Peter Martell, who made a lot of spaghetti westerns, is a less than likable lead; a swarthy brute with John Wayne delivery who's always getting the gun knocked out of his hand. Martell is Mike Rand, an ex-Treasury agent who, we are told, was discharged from a high security post `for the good of the nation.' He must be a bad boy, all right.

Rand says `man' a lot and sweatily muscles his way into bed with the high-class likes of Anita Ekberg. Her name's Lou and she runs a women's spa when she's not shooting up drugs. Ekberg looks pretty darn good for a strung out junkie but she's not given nearly enough to do here.

The other big star, the one who's given way too much to do is Dana Andrews. Andrews is Kelly, Rand's boss, and he's in on a surprising amount of the action in the film. One wonders why, exactly. Andrews seems pretty deep into the sauce and his boot-blacked hair doesn't melt away the years the way they thought it would.

To sum up, aside from a couple of bright spots, this is not really a good or fun film. You would have to be in a pretty tight spot to want to spend your time with Mike Rand, man.

Messy, Boring and Dated in 2011... but Daring and Disturbing for the Brazilian Dictatorship in 1970

"O Ritual dos Sádicos" is a weird low-budget movie by José Mojica Marins that begins with disconnected sequences and many perversions, kinky sex and anti-drug apology. Considered cult by fans of hardcore, the film is messy, boring and dated in 2011.

Its greatest merit is that in 1970, the daring and disturbing "O Ritual dos Sádicos" displeased the military dictatorship and was forbidden by the censorship. Then José Mojica Marins introduced modifications, inclusive the title was changed to "O Despertar da Besta" but the film was released only in the middle 80's and never exhibited in movie theaters. My vote is six.

Title (Brazil): "O Ritual dos Sádicos / O Despertar da Besta" ("The Ritual of the Sadistic / The Awakening of the Beast")

Two ronin - an ex-samurai and an ex-farmer - get caught up a local officials complex game of murder and betrayal.

Watch Kill! Trailer :

Review :

Kill! astounds with its blend of comedy and drama

With all its dark humor and cynical attitude towards samurai code of honor, Kill! comes as a truly unformulaic and genre-bending period drama. Written and directed by the famous Kihachi Okamoto, the film's loosely based on Shūgorō Yamamoto's widely read short story Peaceful Days (also the basis for Kurosawa's Sanjuro). Kill! (or Kiru in Japanese) combines a well-crafted, complex plot with audaciously choreographed fight scenes, some visually-stunning, long shots of Japanese landscapes, with a bunch of witty - and often farcical - dialogues.

The picture presents a story about two luckless, hungry would-be warriors, who find themselves in the middle of a ferocious battle between the opposing sides of a dangerous yakuza clan. Genta (Tatsuya Nakadai) is a former samurai, who got tired of the difficult lifestyle of a wandering ronin. He wasn't able to find any other work, and just wound up in the deserted city, where he met Hanjiro (Etsushi Takahashi), an ex-farmer who wants to become a samurai, but didn't have a chance to prove his abilities yet. As soon as the two discover that the abandoned city is a battleground for a merciless group of samurai retainers, it's simply too late, and they get dragged into the whole deadly intrigue in just a matter of minutes. It becomes clear that one side of the conflict betrayed the other, and the resolution of the struggle might come only when one of the parties kills the other. In the cutthroat game of murder and betrayal, the two main characters take differing sides, and in order to achieve success they need to kill each other at first. Though Hanjiro's first assignment as an aspiring samurai is to dispose of Genta, he hesitates for a long time, as Genta proved to be a valuable source of information regarding the precious samurai life. As the tension mounts, and both groups become more and more irritated and bloodthirsty, Hanjiro and Genta decide to team up and outsmart everyone in their way, leading on to one of the most riveting and satisfying finales in a samurai picture ever filmed.

The problem with Kill! is that it's not as well-known around the world as it really should be. Moreover, it's simply an under-watched samurai epic, even though it actually shares - and makes fun of - all the far-reaching values of many prominent Kurosawa pictures. Here the portrayal of typical samurai warriors is a most parodical one, as Kill! shows so deliberately that there are those, who behave only badly and those, who behave only honorably, and there's nothing in-between. It's a game-changer of sorts when it comes to the topic of samurai, given its highly fanciful attempt at denuding all the hidden aspects of those seemingly convoluted personas.

The cinematography is as raw-looking as it is actually picture-perfect. It brings out all that's eye-popping about the beautiful, yet blood-filled, Japanese scenery.

Kill! also references various other samurai pictures, playing with the idea of a dramatic and serious samurai film, giving itself an utterly lighthearted tone. Kihachi Okamoto created a little, under-appreciated gem that's not only engaging, but also truly smart and concise.

Another typical AC Lyles oater ........

A.C. Lyles produced a number of cheapie westerns in the 1960's, many of which featured former marquee stars that were approaching senior citizen status. This reformed gunman vs. the greedy villain follows that same, tired pattern. The writing and budget were poor.

Don "Red" Barry, John Russell and others were always at home in the saddle, but this low-budget, unchallenging western did not give them a whole lot to work with. The film had a lack of energy & freshness that failed to draw me in as a viewer.

Fort Utah is a mediocre film, that leaves you wanting more ........ Recommended for die-hard sagebrush fans only .

Violent Chorizo/Spaghetti with magnificent and stellar duo as Steffen and Damon

This is an Anthony Steffen and Mark Damon vehicle playing their usual characters as gunslingers and bounty hunters . After gunning down at a Gothic church some desperado who tried to kill them, they set out to return to get their aims . The mysterious gunfighters without a name ride and arrive in the little town to stay for execute his mission , chasing wanted men . It deals about two gunfighters, Fred (Anthony Steffen) and Johnny (Mark Damon) arriving a little town that has the ordinary shops and buildings, as General merchandise, Livery stable, Hardware, Barber shop, Saloon , Hotel .. Once in town they find themselves taking on a corrupt Sheriff named Bob Watson (Piero Lulli) who is working for the local "Rich Man" named Steve Rogers (Luis Induni) married to a widow (Mary Martin who results to be Mark Harmon's mother). Rogers is buying lands to countrymen and attempting to control all the territory because the railroad is coming through . The powerful man hires the killers Farrell Brothers (Raf Baldassarre) to face off the protagonist duo . Can the mysterious gunfighters stop the outlaw brothers ? The drifters will take on a couple of brothers and their hoodlums (Jose Marco) . Meanwhile Fred is appointed as new Sheriff and Johnny falls in love with Elizabeth (Dianik Zurawoska) .

Well crafted Western with interesting screenplay , acceptable cinematography and slick production design by the habitual Cubero and Galicia . Although atmospheric , it's also downbeat and sometimes just downright nasty as when a family is executed and hung. The story is almost rapid and violent as the drifters come to strange frontier town just in time to reckoning bandits . This exciting western contains a story full of violence , good dramatic pace and passable filmmaking . Enjoyable Chorizo-Spaghetti Western mostly produced by Spain and Italian secondary participation ; it follows the Sergio Leone wake , including close-up , zooms , choreographic duels and no being proceeded in American style . The film packs action , shootouts , drama , high body-count and it's fast moving and quite entertaining . It's a thrilling western with spectacular outdoors filmed in Almeria , as usual , dealing with a breathtaking confrontation among protagonists , Anthony Steffen and Peter Lee Lawrence versus heartless Piero Lulli ; and both of them against Luis Induni and his underlings . Acceptable action sequences with rousing crossfire and spectacularly bloody shootouts . Charismatic performance for whole casting . The notorious Spaghetti actor , Anthony Steffen is good in his usual tough role and agreeable performance by Mark Damon in a likable role ; furthermore the slimy, menacing outlaw played by Ralf Baldassarre, here in his customary role as bandit and in a cruelly baddie character . There appears as habitual secondaries in Spanish/Italian Western such as Luis Induni , Luis Barboo , Barta Barry, Miguel Del Castillo , Jesus Guzman who still continues playing , and of course , Carlos Romero Marchent , Joaquin and Rafael Marchent's brother who used to work in their films . The musician Riz Ortalani composes a nice soundtrack , well conducted , this turns out to be one of the most memorable parts of the movie , as it's plenty of enjoyable sounds and haunting musical background and with agreeable leitmotif. The picture is well starred by Anthony Steffen-Antonio De Teffe- , he began playing secondary roles into typical examples of popular Italian films of the late 50s as sword and sandal epics, comedies, adventures and was with spaghetti westerns that renamed achieved worldwide stardom. His acting is often accused of being wooden, but in many manners is ideally suited to playing the steely-faced gunslinger synonymous with the genre . His others successes include well liked features as Seven Dollars to Kill, The last Mohican¨, ¨Train for Durango¨, ¨Gentleman Jo¨ , ¨Four dollars for Django¨, ¨Shango¨, ¨Arizona colt¨, ¨Apocalypse Joe¨ and several others. He was still enjoyable in other genres, specially Giallos as the successful The Night Evelyn Came Out of the Grave¨, ¨Death in Haiti¨ or The ¨Crimes of the Black Cat¨, a good example of Giallo where he played a blind pianist - one of his roles he most liked- , and ¨Killer Fish¨ .

The motion picture is professionally directed and in personal style by Rafael Romero Marchent at his best . Rafael is an expert writer and director of Spaghetti Western as proved in ¨Two crosses on Danger Pass¨, Cry for revenge¨ and ¨Two guns for two twins¨ . While his brother Joaquin Marchent is deemed the Paella Western's best director , his first film was ¨El Coyote¨ and the sequel titled ¨Revenge of Coyote¨ shot in Mexico ; after that , he filmed ¨The shadow of Zorro¨ and ¨Revenge of Zorro¨, he went go directing Western as ¨ Riding to death ¨ , ¨Adventures in the West¨ , ¨Three good men¨, ¨Sabor Venganza ¨ and the most popular and violent ¨Condenados a Vivir¨ . Plus , he wrote for his brother Rafael Romero Marchent the followings Western : ¨Manos Torpes¨, ¨Ocaso Un Pistolero¨ and ¨Garringo¨ . Rating : Passable and acceptable , though contains some flaws and gaps and excessive zooms . Worthwhile watching for the Spaghetti Western aficionados .

Action-packed costume adventure from Italy.

Here is an excellent costume adventure directed by Guido Malatesta. After Czar Alexander II names the vicious General Volkonsky as governor of the Caucasus, the Cossocks decide to plan a revolt. Alessio Andrejevic, a young nobleman, adopts his father's alias, "the black eagle," and begins to free villagers from the terror and tyrrany of Imperial Russia. This film boasts some wonderful cinematography by Augusto Tiezzi, as well as favorable roles for Mimmo Palmara, Loris Gizzi, and Andrea Aureli (the latter of whom actually gets to play a good guy for a change). This film also has a remarkable mucic score (by Angelo Francesco Lavagnino), and contains one of the best battle scenes I've ever witnessed! The fact that Umberto Lenzi wrote the original storyline for this film is icing on the cake. This film is simply too good to be true.

With Sex You Get Kids!

Along with "Yours, Mine and Ours" (Lucille Ball, Henry Fonda) this film marked the start of the "let's-create-a-family-by combining-each-of-ours" genre and soon several variations of the theme plowed their ways into theaters (including the much forgotten "Mulligan's Stew" where childless parents adopt a variety of ethnic representatives). It was a way to have "modern" family dramas survive in the ever changing marketplace. Looking like situation comedies found on television it was no surprise that they influenced what TV families of the 70's would look like. There was a chance to examine the ever increasing reality of divorce (disguised as widowship), yet still have a complete family unit. Of those that survived on television, "The Brady Bunch" and "Eight is Enough" are perhaps the most well known. No wonder abortion became popular! Soon these shows would be replaced by the examination of same sex parents (disguised as "good heterosexual friends") in such shows as "My Two Dads," and "Kate and Allie." Shows such as "The Cosby Show," "Home Improvement," and "Family Matters" brought television full circle so perhaps the 21st Century will see more single parent television and in another ten years a remake of "With Six You Get Eggroll." Of course the title would have to change for political correctness. How about "With Sex You Get Kids?" No wait, the pro-life groups won't like that. Ahhh, the sixties.

A certain day

The work of Italian director Ermanno Olmi should merit a wider distribution, but unfortunately, his films are not seen often enough. His masterpiece "Il posto" was one of the best things that came out of Italy in the 1960s. That is why we were grateful when this film from 1969 showed on a cable channel recently.

The story centers around an advertising executive with a successful career. The agency is controlled by a German firm. He appears to be a happily married man, whose wife stays at home. In flashbacks we get to see a little of a secret relationship he had with a gorgeous researcher, employed by his firm. The director, as he is only identified in the plot, witnesses how his superior suffers a mild stroke during an important meeting. A traumatizing occurrence, nevertheless, because it makes the director aware of his own mortality.

The director loves his house in Tuscany, where he goes occasionally to hunt. He adores the dogs he keeps in the property. The incident with his superior catapults him to a better position. He is shocked when he goes to visit the convalescing colleague, whose whole life has changed when he was so close to a possible death.

As the director is traveling on a solitary road on his way to the airport, and rapt in conversation with a woman assistant, they hear what appears to be a stone that was on the highway, hits the car. Investigating as to what has been the cause, they stop the car to check. The director and the woman watch in horror as an older man lays on the side, injured. The car must have hit a cart the peasant was pushing, something the people in the car didn't notice.

This particular incident makes the director evaluate his life and the situation he has innocently provoked. While his lawyer does everything to get him a suspended sentence, the director realizes his life, while successful, has not given him any satisfaction because he has neglected his wife and daughter that love him, in pursuit of material things.

Mr. Olmi, who also wrote the screenplay, wanted to make a statement about how certain individuals, while being basically honest, get sidetracked into other unimportant things in life. While the director is a good man, certain parts of his past come to the surface as he has to face the death of a man who dies because of a freakish accident he causes.

The best thing in the film is Brunetto Del Vita, an actor unknown to us. The actor gives an effortless performance A rich portrayal full of nuances. It was a pleasure to have caught with this forgotten film. There is also an excellent appearance by Lidia Fuortes, who obviously didn't appear in anything else.

Lamberto Caimi, the cinematographer, captures the wintry scenes, setting the mood to better enjoy the movie. The original musical score is by Gino Negri. Ermanno Olmi directed with his usual style, paying close attention to the story and the consequences it had on a man at a crossroads of his life.

Review :

A standard and low-budgeted motion picture by prolific Lesley Selander , filled with presences of old Western-movie

During the Civil War , Lee Travis (Howard Keel) is hired by government authority to protect townspeople from revenge-seeking outlaws and avoid arms contraband . As a spy taking job as sheriff in small western town as a cover for his espionage activities . As Travis dons a damn Yankee uniform to pull the most daring plot of the war in the West , but he is actually a confederate spy . However, he soon finds out that a local businessman is selling weapons to a band of rampaging Indians . Once there , he has to straighten out a few bad guys who have been selling guns to the Apaches . As the confederate lawman up against gunfighters , and gunrunners as well as usual Indians . As the marshal on the trail of the smugglers is accompanied by a spy woman (Ivonne De Carlo) . Town boss (Scott Brady) is behind the crime and corruption of the little town called Colton but the townspeople are too scared to help sheriff out except for Saloon gal (Marilyn Maxwell) . In the Old west there are always the men who live breathe violence and the women who hold their breath.

This ordinary western is plenty of thrills , go riding , shootouts and suspense as the dreaded final showdown approaches and the protagonist realizes he must stand alone against impossible odds , as his fellow town people for help , nobody is willing to help him ; meanwhile he attempts to clear an issue about weapon gunrunning . This routine Western has the customary story of a sheriff-for-hire who takes the law on his own hands and based on a story and screenplay by Steve Fisher. It begins as a slow-moving Western but follows to surprise us with dark characters and passable plot . This short runtime tale is almost ordinary , a pacifier comes to a town just in time to make sure its citizenry but later the events get worse . Although made in low budget by the producer A.C. Lyles , it has its good moments here and there . Acceptable acting by Howard Keel as a Confederate spy who takes a job as marshal . Notable for the presence of old Western-movie veteran such as John Ireland , Marilyn Maxwell , Scott Brady , Brian Donlevy , Barton MacLane and James Craig . Atmospheric and colorful cinematography in Technicolor , though is necessary a remastering.

This horse opera was realized in low-budget by producer A.C. Lyles and distributed by Paramount Pictures . Lyles produced a lot of Western in short or average budget such as ¨Black spurs¨(1965) , ¨Apache uprising¨(1966); ¨Johnny Reno¨ , ¨Waco¨ , ¨Red Tomahawk ¨and ¨Hostile guns¨(67) , among others ; many of them directed by R.G. Springsteen or Lesley Selander and starred by old glories such as Dana Andrews , Rory Calhoun , George Montgomery and Howard Keel . This quickie was middlingly directed by Lesley Selander , a craftsman working from the 30s . Selander is generally considered to be the most prolific director of feature Westerns of all time, with at least 107 to his credit between 1935 and 1967 . He realized his first feature in 1936, a horse opera , genre in which he would not only excel but one where he would spent much of the rest of his career . He began in this genre with series starred by Buck Jones and ¨Hopalong Cassidy¨ series starred by William Boyd such as ¨Silver on the sage¨ , ¨Three men from Texas¨ and ¨Wide open town¨. In Republic production he directed his better movies such as ¨Panhandle¨and ¨Stampede¨ starred by Rod Cameron and in RKO he directed Tim Holt in 20 films such as ¨Rio Grande patrol¨ and ¨Overland telegraph¨. He subsequently shot B-movies such as ¨Fort Vengeance¨, ¨Arrow in the desert¨, Shotgun¨, ¨Town tamer¨ and his last picture ¨Texas Kid¨. Although Selander couldn't be deemed an "A"-list director, his movies had a professionalism and a verve that many of those made by his fellow B directors lacked . He also filmed detective thrillers , action/adventure motion pictures and even a horror film or two . Rating : 5,5 . Acceptable and passable

Florida Bore: Mob Rules

Oh, jeepers!! And I thought these modern times we live in now were rough. All the murders, kidnappings, poverty, greed. Not to mention there's oil everywhere. Yet, there was a time that was even worse. No, not the dark ages. Miami, 1968. We should all be thankful that that nightmarish era is over. How awful it must have been. What could these innocent citizens have possibly done to deserve such hell? Those bloodthirsty delinquents make my stomach turn. Exactly how bad must one's childhood be for someone to grow up to being the kind of person that goes around squirting others with water hoses? And where do these nogoodnicks get off going around breaking stuff, and getting into fights... and carefully placing infants in trash cans. Well, I don't know about you, but I'm thankful that this hurtful, chaotic era in American history has since ended.

Yeah, so, Herschell Gordon Lewis's idea of riff raff was fairly PG, and might I add, extremely dull, as well. Don't get me wrong. I'm a huge fan of good 'ol H.G. But for cryin' out loud, that doesn't mean I gotta approve of everything the man has ever done, right? And believe me, I certainly do not approve of boring, even if boring was directed by the man. And what's the story with that opening theme? Kinda sounded like John Denver. Well, anyway, we begin with nearly ten minutes of pointless vandalism, courtesy of a gang, or, I guess, a group of people who go around terrorizing a Miami neighborhood, led by the one and the only, the wizard of gore himself, Ray Sager. And yeah, that's about it. Just scenes involving tame crimes, probably meant to offend the more uptight crowds. And I'm pretty sure there was no intentional humor, but who knows? Sound issues make it even more difficult to pay attention, so you ain't getting a detailed description from Tromafreak. Just non-stop, pointless hostility, which failed to entertain me for a single second. They can't all be legendary. If you're one of those peculiar gore-haters, and you want to give Herschell Gordon Lewis an honest chance, I'd recommend his Hixploitation epics, Moonshine Mountain and This Stuff'll Kill Ya. Ultimately, my advice would be to check out Two Thousand Maniacs, and just put up with the Gore. As for Just For The Hell Of It, I don't like this movie, and I never will, but I just don't have the heart to give Herschell's work only one star (although, I'd really like to). You're getting off light, Lewis. 4/10

One of the best!

This is one of the funniest (and emotional) movies of Paco Martinez Soria. It reflects the way of life of the 1960's Spain, when most of the young people emigrated from the country side to the big cities to earn good money and create a family. It is a memorable film which, if you like the actor, I can guarantee you will enjoy.

Veteran director Harald Reinl took the helm for the last three Jerry Cotton films. `Reliable' Reinl was by this time a mainstay in German cinema with Edgar Wallace krimis, Dr. Mabuse thrillers, and Winnetou westerns already under his belt. He shows a certain amount of restraint in Death and Diamonds, the sixth film in the series over all, handling the elaborate robberies with an assured, if unspectacular hand. As the English title implies a diamond heist is at the heart of this entry as Jerry again infiltrates a gang run by a mysterious disembodied voice. This is the Cotton film notable for the uproariously poor English accent that George Nader affects when Jerry Cotton must impersonate alarm specialist Rick Trevor. Nader must have struggled mightily indeed to sound British without coming across as effeminate but the result rings completely false, a major lapse in judgment that nevertheless is highly amusing for the viewer. The bulk of the action in the film is set in southern California, a change of pace in the series. Right off the bat, as Jerry arrives in LA to meet the gang, we are treated to unconvincing rear projections of the newly-completed LA airport, a highly recognizable landmark. Part of the reason for the lack of believability in these few scenes is that the filmmakers had a difficult time matching the southern California light, with Jerry and company appearing a bit drab next to the harsh desert sun in the background. We get to see a lot of film of mid-sixties LA, enjoyable in itself, including the inevitable shots of the Cascade Car Wash that has graced many a movie, and a short but fun collage of LA signage kitsch. One wishes for more glimpses of that vanished art. Another minor quibble with the LA setting is the nightclub used as headquarters for the gang. The building housing the Green Silk bar is obviously older than Los Angeles itself! Inside however, we are treated to the prerequisite go-go chicks dancing away to the tunes of Peter Thomas, always a delight. Reinl has fun with this bit, cutting from a pair of white billiard balls to the jiggling white bikini top of one of the dancers. We also get to spend a lot of time in the factory basement that has made an appearance in every Cotton film thus far. We'd miss it if it weren't there. The action and stunts in the film are handled comparatively well in this entry. The robberies are elaborate in nature and are even commented upon by one of the characters in the film who wonders why the mastermind Stone goes to so much trouble. The viewer will no doubt feel the same as no answer is in evidence. The heist that all this builds up to is the theft of a large quantity of diamonds. The thieves use a highly unlikely method of obtaining the stones, a remote control vacuum cleaner. There's a lot of technical hooey used to gloss over the details of what would most likely be a complete failure. Reinl does manage to pull off the staging well enough to be forgiven, which is quite the feat given the circumstances. Jerry as Trevor balks at every alarm he has to disconnect and is such a nosy whiner in general that one starts to feel empathy with the gang who tire quickly of his antics. At one point they throw Jerry into an industrial furnace and crank up the heat. This is a good suspenseful scene as Nader is obviously pretty close to the fires and if he wasn't our hero his fate would seem inevitable. Not to spoil anyone's fun but how many furnaces have a back door? Later, Jerry manages a couple more imaginative but equally improbable stunts. When several of the baddies are attempting a getaway, Jerry manages to jump through the windshield of their oncoming car. The stunt is impressive enough, but Jerry adds much panache by suavely punching the driver after arriving unannounced in the front seat, taking charge of the situation without mussing a hair on his head. A one hundred foot jump from a bridge onto a moving boat sets up the explosive finale of the film. No wonder Jerry's mom remarks early in the film that the last time he said there was no danger involved he spent seven months in the hospital. To top things off there is a whipping scene in an industrial setting as Mabel (Marlies Drager) lets Lana (Silvie Solar) feel the lick of her lash. This actually sounds better than it turns out to be but it is another fun element in a film that doesn't intend to be an exploitation piece. Further fun is to be had in spotting familiar faces including Silvie Solar, given more to do in this film than she did in Manhattan Night of Murder (65), Carl Mohner (Rififi (56)), and Dieter Eppler, to name a few. Eppler was a genre favorite appearing in many of Harald Reinl's films. Another recognizable face is that of Albert Bessler, a regular in mystery films of the time. Interestingly enough, Bessler has a cameo in Secret of the Black Trunk (61), a Bryan Edgar Wallace adaptation, as an American FBI man! All in all, Death and Diamonds is a middle of the pack entry not without its charm and Reinl was a welcome presence in a previously uneven series.

When he tires of these, he runs away from home only to emerge seven years later as Max Frost, the world's most popular entertainer. When Congressman John Fergus uses Frost as a political ploy to gain the youth vote in his run for the Senate, Frost wills himself into the system, gaining new rights for the young. Eventually, Frost runs for the presidency. Winning in a landslide, he issues his first presidential edict: All oldsters are required to live in "retirement homes" where they are forced to ingest LSD, taking the 60s catch phrase "Never trust anyone over 30" to its most extreme consequences.

Review :

Really radically far-out!!!!

Very much in and of its time. But outrageously good nonetheless. I truly enjoyed the acting by everybody involved--particularly Christopher Jones, Shelley Winters, Diane Varsi, Ed Begley, Sr., Hal Holbrook AND Richard Pryor.

Also a significant key to the film was the music of the legendary songwriting duo of Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, featuring what was, in my estimation, very unsung (excuse the pun) gems which rank right up with ALL their

classics. Just as the recent political satire, "Bulworth", spoke to its times (which are still very much current, by the way), this movie does exactly the same thing.

The clear-cut divisions of generationalism are clearly conspicuous in this film. This movie captured the spirited groove of the late '60s when youth was roaring loudly and taking a stand against the establishment.

For anyone looking for a outrageous take of some of the events of the time, coupled with a hard, aching, laugh-out-loud reaction, this is as great a place as any to go.

Review :

Well developed Paté/Spaghetti Western co-produced by France/Italy and shot in Almeria , as usual .

This is a violent , beautifully crafted as well as exaggerated Spaghetti and packs taciturn acting on cynical characters with bloodbaths including high body-count , sense of style and elaborate narration . It pits ¨Man with no name¨ against two families that are feuding between them , the Rogers and the Caine . As a gunslinger (Robert Hossein) saves the damsel in distress who is also his former flame (Michelle Mercier) and at the same time she is seeking revenge for death her husband . The gunman join forces with the widow pitting the nasty family who uses twisted means to chase them and it terminates in a deadly feud . The pistolero kills various bandits in a gunfight at the saloon , then he is detained and imprisoned by the sheriff . Later on , there takes place kidnapping , killings , street shootouts at a ghost town and tragic events .

This classic Western titled ¨Une Corde, Un Colt..." or "Cemetery Without Crosses" or "The Rope and the Colt" contains slow and deliberating filming , elaborate shoot-outs , and portentous close-ups of grime-encrustred faces with heinous bloodbaths included . It is a strange , slow-moving and almost utterly visual picture with some surprises and well paced . Robert Hossien stars as a leather-clad gunfighter and wearing black glove , drawn into a dramatic facing off between two revengeful families . Hossein plays a drifter similarly to Clint Eastwood's ¨Man with no name¨ from ¨A fistful of dollars¨ and ¨For a fistful of dollars more¨. Fine support cast formed by Italian/French actors , all of them customary Spaghetti such as Guido Lollobrigida or Lee Burton , Daniele Vargas , Serge Marquand , Benito Stefanelli and Ivano Staccioli . Special mention to Michele Mercier as attractive as well as vengeful widow .

This is a well-made French/Italian production , in spite of , there appears usual Spanish secondary players from Paella/Ravioli Western , mostly uncredited , such as Simón Arriaga , José Canalejas , Álvaro De Luna , Charly Bravo , Cris Huerta , Lorenzo Robledo and Angel Alvarez as a Barman likeness to his role in Django . Unforgettable and terrific original music by André Hossein , in Ennio Morricone style , including a catching leitmotif , one of the best of Spaghetti . Worn-out cinematography by Henry Persin , being necessary a nice remastering because of the colors are faded.

This stylish , violent , laconic Western was very well shot by Robert Hossein and is dedicated to Sergio Leone , who made one of the more important scenes . Hossein did revive his career almost instantly on the strength of this film through the main role and filmmaking . Director Robert Hossein claims that Dario Argento was not involved in writing the screenplay with perhaps not more than two dozen lines of dialog ; Dario Argento is listed in the credits on the Italian and German versions but not on the French version . Robert Hossein said that the dinner scene at the Rogers house was directed by Sergio Leone. Rating : Better than average Spaghetti Western .

transgressive

Carroll Baker strides confidently through this potentially transgressive film. Indeed in the mid sixties this probably did cause more than a ripple of concern/delight from the cinema audience. For a man to maintain a string of lovers with some or all of those women knowingly complicit has always been more or less acceptable, certainly if he is famous or rich enough. The same for a woman, ah there's the rub. But for a time such issues were seriously pondered and this film is clearly a product of such thought, even though Mr Ferreri is intent upon asserting his belief in 'true nature' in the end. So viewing this very well made film now it is necessary to at least consider the possibility of Carroll Baker's harem otherwise it will make no sense. Good writing, good acting, good looking lady and good jazzy score from Morricone.
