Amazing film within a film about the misuse of power

It is a matter of highly disreputable concern that this sublime film directed by Lucian Pintilie is not so well unknown globally.When a great film like this remains unknown for whatever reasons what hurts the most is the fact that an opportunity has been denied to viewers to watch,understand and appreciate a rewarding film which proffers a multiplicity of interpretations.Reconstituirea is without an ounce of doubt one of the boldest East European films which challenge the repressive hegemony of a communist state albeit in a very circumspect manner.Although punishment or to be precise reeducation of two young boys remains the film's central theme there is also some benign overlapping of many life affirming themes and situations such as first love,friendship,sacrifice,pain,suffering,indifference etc.Lucian Pintilie came into international prominence as Reconstituirea was applauded at Cannes Film festival in 1968 but as it was critical of communist party establishment,Pintilie was banned from traveling to France. This was the high price audacious film makers like him from East European countries had to pay in the past.

Dileep Kumar v/s Sanjeev Kumar (0-1)

This is the first movie (of only 3 I guess and my score is 0-3) where the acting greats Dileep Kumar and Sanjeev Kumar acted together. And I guess Sanjeev Kumar (in what ever limited opportunity he got he) just overshadowed Dileep Kumar (who incedently was rarely below average) and in this movie was a joy to watch.

We have another great actor Balraj Sahani and great actress Vaijayanthi Mala giving polished performances.

Dileep Kumar and Balraj Sahani belong to two feuding families (of a town on banks of Ganges). Sanjeev Kumar is younger brother of Balraj Sahani who talks to Dileep Kumar for reconciling but get killed by someone who does not want these to families to join hands. So there is more feud. Vaijanthi Mala plays a dancer who is desired by both Dileep Kumar and Balraj Sahani.

Great acting, good songs (and Dileep Kumar has danced well in Mere pairon main ghoongroo bandha de ...). But, story I would say is on known tracks.

Review :

Worthwhile for Sutherland's soliloquy and the cast call on the train platform. A slightly startling film of its time.

It is silly the way we talk about movies. They are not meant for the ages but for slices of time. Once in a great great while one captures something eternal...8 1/2, Third Man, etcetera, but films are social chewing gum. Here is a fine example of an English director of the 1960s doing some turns that were fresh seeming and of the time...playing to the camera in the post dramatic sequence...don't tell me that wasn't and still would be a kick. And Sutherland's lisping soliloquy in the desert, my first awareness of the Canadian actor. A memorable film, one with some fans, many deprecators. But that's what makes horse races. Does sit hold up to critical analysis? Probably not, certainly not in the context of a lot that has followed. But lovely and fresh and exciting at the time, just like that first date with the sweet fresh girl who is now the woman with the scar from the auto accident. We change, the cinema changes. Films are not for the ages, after all, but acts of commerce sometimes tinged with art and freighted with our associations.

Beautiful and ugly

"Shame" ("Skammen") (Swedish, 1968): Definitely one of Ingmar Bergman's masterworks, with cinematography by Sven Nyquist (who did most of Bergman's, and some of Woody Allen's films). "Shame" is less symbolic than some of Bergman's works, and, an intense, psychological study of a married couple, Jan and Eva, (Max von Sydow & Liv Ullmann) who have their personal problems like anyone else, but suddenly find their otherwise quiet Swedish island life completely upset by a civil war. Faced with increasing losses and degradations, we watch them struggle not only against circumstances, but their own psyches. The number of "shames" depicted is huge. This story may have influenced Lina Wertmuller's film "Swept Away". Just a guess. "Shame" is an ULTIMATE in gorgeous b/w photography, and ugly psychological horror.

"MAN FASST ES NICHT"

Social attitudes were changing in the late 60's and the film history attributed to these changes. A notorious attribution from the German cinema are the so-called "Lümmel films" (6 in total) in which the young students and other youths dissociate themselves from the older generation. But as this series was made as comedy within the mainstream German cinema, its rebellion is toned down to say the least and no more than a standard farce is the outcome.

In this episode there are some remarks made by the students to their teachers about the Nazi-past of some of them, Vaterland, military discipline and such, but on the whole the film is no more than a series of the usual adolescent, cheap and boring jokes and the usual petty love affair. The script is just acceptable with only a hint of story; in fact it is no more than a series of events, wearisome held together by director Werner Jacobs who directs in his well-known "as long as it is on the celluloid" style.

Great comedian Theo Lingen was a regular in the series and brings with him his charm, but can not provide anything else. Georg Thomalla keeps himself in check and watch how charming he can be when he does so. The rest of the cast is nondescript, but I love Hannelore Elsner in her white-lace corset.

It must be said that compared to the sequels (and other films prompted by the "Lümmel films") this episode is not made badly at all - the quality such as there is would deteriorate in the sequels - , but in the end the viewer will agree with the phrase that Hansi Kraus frequently says directly into the camera: "Man fasst es nicht" - It is beyond understanding.

deserves far greater plaudits, and its relative obscurity is wholly undeserved.

Somewhat of a Giallo maestro, Massimo 'What Have They Done To Solange' Dallamano directs this this early entry in the gialli cycle (1968) and it proves to not only be a worthy effort, but a dashed entertaining thriller to boot. While this does contain the ultimate Giallo motif of the shiny, black gloved killer, the film wisely eschews the giddy silliness of the genre and proposes a more sombre examination of sexual infidelity, and the pursuant jealousies. If anything 'A Black Veil for Lisa' follows a more stolid euro crime narrative; one where a shadowy hit-man working for a vicious gang of drug dealers is happily bumping off all those who cross its nefarious path; and when this murderous trail comes to the attention of Inspector Franz Bulon (John Mills) his dogged investigations ultimately proposes a logical but devastating solution to his marital frustrations. John Mills is truly excellent as the paranoid cuckold inspector; Robert Hoffman is suitably suave and charming as the libidinous killer and Luciana Paluzzi makes for buxom eye candy; while she does little more than pout around in a series of skimpy outfits, this auburn-haired temptress does this with great elan! Dallamano directs this engaging Giallo with real verve, and the taut narrative uncoils its way to a genuinely thrilling conclusion. 'A Black Veil for Lisa' deserves far greater plaudits, and its relative obscurity is wholly undeserved.

FILM WITH THE IQ OF A 4-YEAR OLD

"Immer Ärger" with the German comedy and especially in the genre of the "adolescent students" comedy. This genre became very popular in the late 60's and early 70's and could be considered a German mainstream answer to the then movement of rebellious youth, though the rebellion of the students never goes any further than kissing before marriage and dancing on the school desk. As such this genre shows only nondescript, worthy and conventional boys and girls.

This film is a classic in its genre (and only there), triggered quite some likewise films (as the notorious "Die Lümmel von der 1. Bank" series) and is also standard for the poor execution of films in this genre; this film is slightly better made than others (that is: I have seen much worse), but the direction is poor and has no sense of timing and things like editing and cinematography (with that terrible zooming) seem to be that of film students on their first day in college. But it should also be remembered that already in general technical standards (had) deteriorated in the German mainstream cinema during the 60's and the 70's.

This prototype lets the viewer endure some of the regulars in many casts: Roy Black who can not be refrained from singing and has the ability to drain of any intelligence from the viewer, Uschi Glas who is as sexy as glass, Peter Weck and Georg Thomalla who both are the only ones who think they are funny. Maybe some of the humour would have worked with good direction.

The film is aimed at (young) grown-ups, but the film's IQ never surpasses that of a 4 year-old.

Reason: Hat collection

Maura Monti (Mireya), Amedee Chabot (Adriana), Isela Vega (Dalila) and Elizabeth Campbell (Patricia), are hit women who kill men in cold blood. But not everybody, only men who don't comply with their 'godmother' (Tamara Garina). Their tasks are so secret and dangerous that only they can do them because they are:

a) women,

b) young,

c) beautiful and

d) psychedelic, ha-ha

This movie could be shallow and dated, but it is very important because it is a documentary on hats. A hat main objective is to protect from sun or rain, but here, they rival only with the fruit basket or cage with bird of Carmen Miranda and NInón Sevilla. Check them out! And the best hats are worn by Chabot, specially the one in the style of a diving bell. Too bad they don't mention a credit for costume designer, or better yet, hat designer...

Wishman at her best! Role-playing never looked so fun!

This is a classic from one of the greatest softcore directors ever, Doris Wishman (directing under the name "Louis Silverman"). This one has it all! Gambling, roll-playing, bondage, spanking, playing 'horsie", lesbianism, bondage, a 3-way, great early 70's decor, voyeurism and a dollop of incest make this an unforgettable film.

Basically, poor early 20's "teen" Chris' father loses her in a card game, dooming her to be perv Alex and his oddly speechless wife's plaything. While Alex makes Chris play the role of every person or animal that ever let him down (mom,cat, horse,etc), his wife ties Chris' father (sicko Larry Hunter) to a chair and puts cigarettes out in his face!

This obviously isn't for everyone, but if you want to see a flick that makes you feel like you need a shower (or maybe a confessional), this is it, baby! RECOMMENDED. In fact, you're missing out if you don't see all of the late, great Doris Wishman's films.

Not bad, but not Sellers

I guess it would be redundant at this point to say Alan Arkin's Clouseau can't touch Peter Sellers, which is certainly true. Nevertheless, I admit I liked this movie (though a lot less than the Pink Panthers, of course), the plot is actually credible and there are some truly funny moments. I give Arkin credit for attempting a role heavily identified with another- and better- actor, and he's OK in it. It's not a total disaster, as some people have claimed and worth watching, if only for the comparisons. ** 1/2 out of 4

This cheap Mexican horror film is a remake of Cardona's Doctor of Doom (1962), spiced with nudity, medical footage, women wrestling, and cheap gore shots. Female masked wrestler Lucy (who looks like the devil) beats the stuffing out of an opponent - a wrestling lady with a red costume like Catwoman. Lucy finally hurls her opponent from the squared circle and knocks her out cold. Although Lucy's cop boyfriend tries to convince her that it's all part of the show, Lucy can no longer handle the stress of wrestling. Oh come on! you can't be too harsh with this one.

Now, this is a really obscure Mexican Horror flick. It's almost impossible to find it even in Mèxico. I don't know if it's banned but it's worth searching. This is a movie with many clichès from Mexican Horror: we get wrestlers (now that they are popular), boobs, and creepy settings.

This movie has good cheesy gore. Don't expect a shocking exploitation movie. It's just an ultra low budgeter with guts.

The beast is not that horrid as the title says, in fact, it's kind of cheesy (in the likes of "Night Of The Demon") , but it delivers for the movie's tone.

I recommend this one for lovers of B-movies that can stand cheesiness through 90 minutes. There's some gore and violence but not enough to consider this one as exploitation.

Enjoyable Tongue-in-Cheek Glossy Sixties Romp With Catchy Theme Tune

This is an enjoyable, tongue-in-cheek glossy sixties romp whereby a couple of conmen and their girlfriend attempt to keep ahead of their 'marks' with mixed results.

A love-triangle develops as the young protege tries to take over the business and steal his old mentor's girlfriend. Inevitably they get under each others feet and start feuding and distrusting one another. As a result, the ending contains a good twist.

The direction is upbeat and enthusiastic, bright and brisk. The locations are shot well, and its accompanied by a catchy whistled theme tune throughout. The acting is accomplished right down to the supporting cast and is well worth viewing if you are lucky enough to catch it on tv one afternoon.

Love all these movies, but a bit annoyed by this one.

I can't help but wonder how this movie came about. Yu Wang was huge in the late 60s and had just done The One-Armed Swordsman. Some executive might have said "Hey we had this huge hit where Yu Wang was disabled. Let's think of another major injury he has to overcome and it'll be a hit!" They settled on blindness, but Chang Cheh thought they were idiots, so they got someone else to direct it. I doubt this really happened, but blindness isn't the only obstacle for Yu Wang in this movie.

Well, naturally there are dozens of armed men for him to cut down. But what bothered me most here was there are so so many dumb and stubborn characters. The melodrama factor is really high too. But, I watch these for the action, and it was pretty good. The main villain, Feng Tien, admits pretty early that he's not as good as Yu Wang, but they still get a few fights out of the pair because of the villain's plans. Great here as a villain, especially what he pulls on Yu Wang near the end, oh my god.

In Search of Meaning

I can only echo what the other reviewers have said of this curious film. I watched it to see one of my favorite stars, Julie Christie, in one of her most obscure films. It is very much a product of its time, rather like a third-rate imitation of Antonioni, but more light and whimsical, or should I say pointless and inconsequential? Its very hard to see what drove Christie to make this, other than I think I remember reading that she owed producer Joseph Janni a last film under a contract...maybe he needed a tax write-off? Oh well, if you feel nostalgic for the sixties its a lulling time-waster, with the always lovely Julie. I enjoyed the last scenes at the Geneva airport, whose look reminded me of something out of Jacques Tati's "Playtime". Plus, you get a look at Michael Sarrazin's butt, but not, unfortunately, Julie's.
