Kirk Douglas romances Sylva Koscina whom he is protecting
"A Lovely Way to Die" is just an average movie, overall, one with some plusses that are attractive and some minuses. An average movie is watchable and provides a reasonable amount of enjoyment and entertainment without being really very good or deep or really memorable.
The look of the film is good. The stars are what make it. You'll like the movie much better if you like star power and glossy settings, and if you like the typical romance formula which this has. Douglas is a womanizer who drops them as fast as he finds them. But he finds himself falling for Sylva Koscina who he believes has had her husband murdered. Ms. Koscina speaks English with a sometimes very heavy accent. Eli Wallach is another star here. He's her defense lawyer. The romance follows a rocky road, typical of Hollywood.
The story has a light touch, but it's also supposed to be a crime story. There's a gang operating nearby Koscina's mansion. The crime part and even her husband's murder all remain murky from start to end, but there is action to the story and some detective work by Douglas, who is a former tough cop. This part of the story is not handled as well and the result is an uneasy mixture. There's a chase that also begins to be played as farce too, and that also adds to our quandary as to how to take the film. It's trying to be like a Cary Grant-Sophia Loren movie or like a "Charade" but it's simply out of its class. Think of it as a very modest movie something of that type. This movie is a mystery-detective-comedy-romance.
It was all in a day's work for these stars and their drawing power. You could do worse. You could do better.
