It is what it is

This is a late 60's/early 70's example of British "kitchen-sink realism" that began in the late 50's with films like "Saturday Night, Sunday Morning" and really continues up into the present day with the films of Mike Leigh and Ken Loach. Strangely, the late 60's/early 70's Swinging London era was an especially fertile period for these films, even though many of them--"Up the Junction", "Deep End", "I Start Counting"--were so provincial and working-class British, you'd never guess that anything extraordinary was happening in London at the time.

For whatever reason (perhaps there was a law?) every appealing young Brit actress of that era seemed to have to make at least one movie where she has a romance with a man old enough to be her father. Judy Geeson got stuck with Rod Steiger in "Three Into Two won't Go" and her younger sister Sally Geeson REALLY got stuck with Norman Wisdom (the UK's answer to Jerry Lewis) in "What's Good for the Goose". Susan George got romantically paired with the somewhat older Michael York in "The Strange Affair" and the much older Charles Bronson in "Twinky". Haley Mills avoided this IN MOVIES, but in real-life married her much older director Roy Boulting. And art actually imitated life for Jane Birkin as she went to France to have an on-screen AND off-screen romance with middle-aged French singer Serg Gainsbourg in "Slogan". This movie was apparently the May-December quota film for Olivia Hussey, the teenage star of Zeffereli's "Romeo and Juliet". It's more believable than most because she's paired with the 30-ish Tom Bell, who's conceivably still youthful and handsome enough to attract the interest of a teenager. And Hussey's character is a very precocious fifteen-going-on-sixteen and from an upper social class. She's an aspiring actress and he's a married theatrical electrician with two kids and an elderly gambling-addict father.

This is one of the most realistic of the British realist films perhaps because nothing really melodramatic ever happens. Unfortunately, that's also makes it rather boring, aside from the excellent performances by leads Hussey and Bell, and to a lesser Judy Carnes as the Bell character's unsuspecting(?)wife. I suppose that might also make it MORE of a male fantasy in that it doesn't necessarily end in divorce, scandal, and a lengthy jail sentence, but there actually isn't much of a sexual element to this either as most of the physical romance occurs off screen. It's not a bad film by any means, but it's one of those films that just kind of is what it is.

For Karloff Fans Only

The Sinister Invasion (1971)

* 1/2 (out of 4)

This here was one of the four Mexican films Boris Karloff filmed before his death and this is one that was released after the horror icon had passed. In the film he plays Professor John Mayer who in 1890 has created a ray machine, which he shoots into space. The ray just happens to cross paths with a flying saucer and the aliens decide to come and destroy it but to do so they take over the body of a serial killer. Also known as ALIEN TERROR, THE INCREDIBLE INVASION and about a dozen other titles, this film is probably the most entertaining out of the films Karloff did below the border but that's really not saying too much. This is a hard film to fully understand as the plot never makes too much sense but I'm going to guess this is due to two directors making the picture (Jose Luis Gonzalez the Mexican stuff, Jack Hill the Karloff material). It's also worth noting that the aliens here are so stupid that they have to be the children of those seen in PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE. OK, one understands why they want to destroy the ray but they've got the technology to do so without taking over the body of this killer. This killer just ends up causing so many problems and yet the aliens keep on using him. The entire subplot with the killer is quite strange to watch but it does add a rather surreal feel to the picture. As for Karloff, he's certainly showing signs of his health issues but he's pretty good here. Unlike the other three films where he's basically just an extended cameo, he actually gets a pretty big role here, which is nice to see. The rest of the supporting players aren't as memorable but we've all seen much worst. The production values are cheap and it's obvious you're not in the 1890s but this could have been much, much worse. With that said, this was released a couple years after Karloff's death and you really have to wonder who would want to see something like this other than those curious die-hard Karloff fans.

The strike galvanizes her: she's learning to read and has studied a city woman who visits the village. Now, as she removes her traditional dress and rejects a ritual to cast out her new rebellious spirit, will she gain independence as did Tunisia and the strikers?

Lasting powerful impression

Two years ago I saw this film for the first time. I thought it slow, and I missed dialogue. The location was interesting, though - and still the story came alive in the hands of this powerful actress. I was fascinated - and even months later, the story continued to resonate within me.

The events are small. The heroism is of a human scale. The motivation for change is believable. These appear to be real people, captured so effectively by a documentary filmmaker - and yet it is a created story. If it is not factually based, it tells truth.

Yes, the film is slow and deliberate, but "Ramparts of Clay" has substance. The humanity of all the actors makes them my kin - and I care about them, and what will happen to them.

The inhabitants of a small, remote island have been practicing voodoo rites and worshipping an evil priest named Damballah for years, but the local law officials generally turn a blind eye to this death cult's bizarre activities. Captain Labesch arrives from the mainland, determined to crack down on the island's lawlessness and clean up the ineffectual, hard-drinking police force. He appeals for assistance from wealthy plantation tycoon Carl Van Molder, who owns nearly half of the island and wields a great deal of influence over the population. Van Molder has made the study of parapsychology his life's work and believes in the secret powers of the mind. He warns Labesch not to interfere with this forgotten island's ancient ways. Also visiting is Van Molder's niece, Annabella, a temperance crusader who wants her uncle to help fund the International Anti-Saloon League. Crappy, But Hilarious Trash-Horror With The Great Boris Karloff

"La Muerte Viviente" aka. "Isle Of The Living Dead" aka. "Snake People" of 1971, is an extremely trashy and unintentionally hilarious movie, and one of the last movies of the great horror icon Boris Karloff. I have utmost respect for director Jack Hill for movies like his great blaxploitation classic "Coffy" starring Pam Grier. "Snake People", directed by Hill and Juan Ibanez, however, is one of these movies that are so bad they're actually pretty good. I'm a big fan of trashy B-horror flicks, but the only two reasons why I enjoyed "Snake People" were Boris Karloff, who plays a rather small role in this, and the movie's unintentional fun value.

The tropical island "Korbai" is reigned by a bizarre voodoo cult. The cult's unholy priests, amongst them a creepy midget and a scary snake dancer, sacrifice beautiful local girls to their occult deity "Damballah". The girls, who volunteer as sacrifices in order to achieve eternal life, are then resurrected from the dead as mindless zombies. Determined to put an end, to these rituals, that are ignored by the local police, Captain Pierre Labesch comes to the island. He asks the islands richest landowner, Carl Van Molder (Boris Karloff) for help. In the meanwhile, Van Molder's niece, who came to the island to fight alcoholism, befriends a local police lieutenant.

As a horror movie, "Snake People " fails entirely. As an unintentional comedy, however, it is hilarious. The dialogue is extremely poor (and therefore extremely hilarious) and apart from Karloff, the acting is really bad too. The locations are amateurish, the plot has huge holes and many logical errors. While Captain Labesch, for example, is obviously French, and came to the island sent by 'the government', other law enforcement officers of this government have English names. I laughed a lot when I saw this movie the first time, and I will definitely watch it again. Don't expect any suspense, but watch this as the unintentional comedy it is and entertainment will be guaranteed. 3/10

revenge is sweet, especially when it's sadistic

What could be better than seeing 70's softcore porn regulars Jane Tsentas, Peggy Church and Uschi Digert in various stages of nudity, ranging from full frontal to bra and panties. To reach this stage, 2 psychos kidnap 5 girls and have them jog in place, do push ups, touch their toes and stretch their bodies. All wear miniskirts...and, well, you can guess the rest. The girls are also forced to lie on their backs and stick their legs straight up in the air. Oh la la! Finally the girls get revenge and the best scene is when Peggy Church grabs a big pair of pliers and crushes the cocks of their tormenters. 70's soft core porn doesn't get much better then this.
