Pretty good!!

I can't really remember why I sat and watched this movie years ago. I guess because it was late at night and there was nothing else to watch on t.v. The movie is about two women who live in a log cabin in the middle of the woods during the whitest and coldest winter. It is not really obvious that they are lesbians, they just look like good friends at first, but then the secret gets out and catches you by surprise(especially that explicit scene where they make-out on the bed and then one of them starts to kiss the other on the neck, shoulders and chest). All hell breaks loose when one of the lovers soon becomes romantically and physically involved with a man who wanders slowly but painfully into their lives. The other woman gets jealous and will stop at nothing to win the heart of her lesbian lover back!! Pretty good acting!!

A Spaghetti Westworld Comedy? Charming!

Tom Bosley pulls off a surprisingly funny performance in this odd-ball Italian western tale. Some camp, a good-looking girl, a handsome guy and some baddies. Oh yes, an overweight robot Sheriff!

My favorite quote - "In the hands of a woman, even a broken machine can do better than a man."

See it for fun - you'll be afraid at first that it will become a bore-fest but it really is charming.

Whatever happened to Charlie?

I recently saw this film on TV for the 1st time in more than 30 years. The memories it brought back are indescribable. It reminded me of a time when Disney made family films that were not just cartoons. For those of us who are parents now, it is becoming harder and harder to find films that we can take our children to, except for cartoons. It is very sad that films such as Swiss Family Robinson, Candleshoe and Freaky Friday are no longer being made. And after seeing this film again made me curious about what happened to the cougar who played Charlie. As far as I know, he never played in another film. Where did he live and when did he die? If anyone knows, I would appreciate any information they can offer.

Spaghetti-screwball, with too many of its screws loose...

Sophia Loren and gaunt, wide-eyed Vittorio Gassman play a destitute married couple whose luck seems to change when Gassman is offered free room and board in an empty, dusty mansion which supposedly houses a ghost. He doesn't tell his wife the history of the spooky place, and she doesn't tell him about a smitten former lover of hers who has moved into an upstairs room, hoping to steal her from her husband. Marital mix-up offers comic misunderstandings, some funny moments, and several beautiful shots of La Loren (although her auburn hair seems to get darker as the film progresses). The half-English/half-dubbed look of the picture is pretty shoddy, and the entire third act (which skips ahead in time, defying all logic and credulity) is nearly crippled by Gassman's over-acting (the biggest mystery is why Sophia married him in the first place). Still, there's a cute in-joke in the final tag, and enough modest laughs throughout to keep the silly circumstances lurching along. **1/2 from ****

Review :

It really looks like a TV movie

This film made for theatres looks like a TV product, or a TV pilot for a series. But it is not. It also smells the sixties at one hundred miles, and I like it. The story has already been told in the plot line. nothing very special here but it remains entertaining, well done, even without any ambition. I saw nearly all the Francis D Lyon's films, and this one is not his best but neither his worst. We can consider it among the tons of mid spy films made in the sixties, with cools heroes, much action atmosphere and beautiful gals hanging around some swimming pools.

I am surprised this film has not been commented yet.

If you like sixties movies, music score, settings and so on, try to get it.

Nothing new, but a perfect little genre movie

Shamango (a.k.a. "Joe" depending on which dubbed version you watch) comes into a town where Mexican bandits try to control. He seems to be a weakling everybody's making fun of, but gets really mean after a few insults. Doesn't sound new, because there is nothing new. But: this a perfect little genre movie, no disappointments, well worth spending 90 minutes of your precious time on. The actors Anthony Steffen as Shamango and Eduardo Fajardo as the Mexican colonel (with an evil grin that makes crocodiles give up their job) are doing well, so is Bruno Nicolai with his powerful music and cameraman Francisco Marin with his sinister pictures.

Review :

Custer deserves a more colorful script...and a better Custer...

Handsome but dull western (courtesy of Spanish landscapes) to depict Custer on a mission to steal land from the Indians. A blond ROBERT SHAW looks convincing enough on horseback but something about his accent seems wrong and charisma is lacking. The Indians look more European than like American Indians and too many of the action scenes are slow paced and repetitive as Custer and his men go on various missions.

MARY URE as his wife, Libby, has little to do but register impatience with being kept in the background between battles with long waits before she shares the screen with real-life hubby, ROBERT SHAW. A more mature looking JEFFREY HUNTER (sporting gray hairs) is Will Benteen, one of Custer's more loyal officers.

The mountainous plains in Spain are no substitute for our standard glimpses of John Ford territory with not a single shot looking as though photographed in the American West. But it's the dull storyline that defeats the movie from ever becoming anything more than a series of handsomely photographed outdoor sequences. A surprise Indian attack by the Cheyennes on an Indepdence Day Celebration is one of the more colorful moments and triggers Custer's determination to fight the redskins, no matter that they greatly outnumber his men.

Nothing in Shaw's performance suggests the color and vigor of Custer's bigger than life personality nor does the screenplay do any real justice to the man or the myth. As storytelling goes, the first half of the film manages to be just plain dull and the film only picks up speed as it nears the climactic fight at Little Big Horn.

Battle skirmishes with Indians are, on the whole, well staged and full of furious gunsmoke and flying arrows--but the big set piece is saved, of course, for the finale which comes too late to save the first half of the film from the doldrums. One is left with the impression that some inventive fictionalizing would have helped (as it did with THEY DIED WITH THEIR BOOTS ON).

Summing up: A very miscast Shaw plays Custer as a snarling villain who barks orders and the story has a plodding script. Could have been much more impressive if filmed in the U.S. on more realistic locales with more accurate casting. A cameo by ROBERT RYAN is no help at all.

DOCTOR FAUSTUS (Richard Burton and Nevill Coghill, 1967) **1/2

Cerebral and altogether too-literal transcript of Christopher Marlowe’s venerable play – the end result is opulent yet claustrophobic, not to mention dull.

Burton the producer/director certainly made inspired choices for his collaborators – production designer John De Cuir, cinematographer Gabor Pogany, composer Mario Nascimbene. Burton the actor, then, is riveting as always (particularly the monologue towards the end) – but real-life spouse Elizabeth Taylor is simply ludicrous as Faustus’ object of desire (in various disguises including Helen of Troy)! The remaining cast is largely made up of Oxford University drama students (the University itself, of which Burton was a former graduate, partly financed the film!): of these, only Andreas Teuber’s bald-headed, monk-clad Mephistopheles manages a striking performance.

The “Mondo Digital” review had likened this to the cult horror films made by Hammer, Roger Corman and Mario Bava: judging by the campy Papal sequence (with a host of fey clergymen on whom Faustus plays childish pranks) and an equally tacky conjuring act before a medieval court, I’d say that Burton and Coghill probably drew more on the decadent work of Federico Fellini or Pier Paolo Pasolini than anything else! Anyway, the experimental nature of the film extends to the baffling over-use of a pointless ‘foggy’ effect; its depiction of lust, however, emerges as traditionally naïve – with frolicking satyrs in a garden setting and decorous female nudity (including Taylor herself for one very brief moment).

Ulimately, DOCTOR FAUSTUS is to be considered an interesting failure – a personal tour-de-force for Burton but which, perhaps, needed a steadier hand…say, Joseph Losey (with whom the two stars would soon work on BOOM! [1968], curiously enough, a similar and equally maligned blend of fantasy and theatricality).

The funniest movie ever made!

This movie is so funny that certain scene made me laugh so hard I cried. This is a spoof off from year before "Danger: Diabolik" with also starred Terry-Thomas. The plot has comedian Johnny Dorelli as a phantom hitman who is in need of work so he hired to kill all 400 people who is next to inherit a fortune. Lots of funny gags that makes this film a classic. The U.S. video print is missing several scenes though.

Amateur hour even by the Django clone standards.

Directod Eduardo Mulargio (as Edward G. Muller!) churned out a bunch of cheapie spaghetti westerns in the genre's heyday in the late 60's to early 70's. Don't Wait Django, Shoot is one of them, with Ivan Rassimov (as Sean Todd - the blue-eyed character actor mostly known for his roles as villain and psychopathic killer in gialli) in the role of Django Foster (he's got a surname too this go around!) trying to avenge the death of his father by a bunch of Mexican cut-throat extras with greasy faces. The production values are as low as you'd expect from a Django clone probably made in a week to turn in a quick buck, there's lots of non-acting going on, the dialogue is very poor and the script seems to have been conceived in one day and written in another. Entire scenes seem to exist for no other reason than to communicate a single line and the gunfighting is dime a dozen. The movie looks like it was shot 15 minutes from Rome instead of Arizona, Sonora or wherever it's suppose to take place. There are dozens more well made, more interesting, more entertaining spaghetti westerns out there and I'm not even talking about the A-list pictures of Leone, Corbucci or Sollima. This is a third-tier quickie at best and just not a good movie.

Dull and unrealistic IRA drama

With its limited production values,flat direction and uninspired acting this looks more like an extended piece of TV docu drama.Tom Bell is told at the beginning that he has lost his remission by another prisoner and actually believes him.he is thus goaded into one of the simplest prison breaks ever put on screen.Almost one jump and he's free.He is taken to the Republic of Ireland where he meets the IRA gang that sprung him.There in the pub we meet up with the landlord ,the marvelous Noel Purcell,who is the only reason to continue to watch this film.Bell is cajoled into bombing a local factory in a symbolic move.However he is angry when he finds out that he was lied to about his remission and that if he had waited he would have been released in two months.He has had enough of violence,particularly when he finds out that the gang have committed a robbery.He helps the police to round up the gang.Best watched with the fast forward on.

Hilarious yet incredibly moving

I just saw this at the Toronto Jewish Film Festival and I was completely astounded! I was expecting it to be good as several people had expressed their love for it but I was not expecting to feel about it the way that I did. A story about a young boy who gets sent away by his family, for his own protection, is shown through the eyes of an imaginative, smart, little boy. I found it amazing to see a film about this time, as experienced by a child - fascinating. Although the story is very difficult, sad and almost unimaginable, Claude Berri manages to make this film powerful and yet very funny at the same time. I would recommend this movie to everyone. It is a French film however for those of you who need them, there are subtitles. So what are you waiting for... go see it!

Bland

There's not much to recommend this bloated and overlong international co-production. Stars Maxmillian Schell and Raf Vallone play brothers in the Polish Army who, in 1940, flee their Siberan labor camp in an effort to reach the comparative safety of Afghanistan. First, though, they must sojourn in Uzbekistan, where they are sheltered by kindly Ibram (Fernando Rey). Unfortunately, Schell falls for Ibram's lovely wife Ajmi (Irene Papas) whilst Vallone develops a crush on local lass Marusia (Maria Perschy) before falling ill to a case of typhus. All of these soap opera style diversions lead up to the film's less than thrilling escape climax, as our intrepid heroes finally try to cross into Afghanistan. Your eyes will have glazed over by the 50 minute mark, but the film drags on for another hour.

So wrote film critic Eduardo Geada, in a daily newspaper ("A Capital" 1970) at the film's premiere. At this distance, I can only remember a number of shapely women in mini-skirts, and half-nude in a massage parlour invaded by two fighting groups of spies, and a fast paced actioner, well photographed, and average as entertainment. It would be scheduled at noon on public TV now.

In the fog of a child's memory... every movie was a hit.

The previous reviewer's summation of this movie seems to ring true, especially the part about seeing it over and over on HBO as a child. I have been looking for a copy of this movie for almost ten years ( video stores, garage sales, flea markets, etc.) and no such luck.

Does anyone have any ideas? Someone make me a copy for christ sake. I will send the BBC their royalties if it comes down to that.

Feel free to write me with any suggestions or comments on the movie.

I wouldn't hazard a guess at the plot or acting as I haven't seen the flick in about 21 years.
