witty and good looking

This had some really great dialogue throughout, making it an even more pleasurable experience besides the intriguing offbeat plot and great locations. The photography is extremely colorful and looked great with original 35mm Panavision widescreen prints in IB Technicolor. I don't think distributor WB did a very good job of selling this one, which was sadly the case with many of their films when attached to 7 Arts. Another film that should be on tape and (one can only hope) DVD.

Will Penny, an aging cowpoke, takes a job on a ranch which requires him to ride the line of the property looking for trespassers or, worse, squatters. He finds that his cabin in the high mountains has been appropriated by a woman whose guide to Oregon has deserted her and her son. Too ashamed to kick mother and child out just as the bitter winter of the mountains sets in, he agrees to share the cabin until the spring thaw. But it isn't just the snow that slowly thaws; the lonely man and woman soon forget their mutual hostility and start developing a deep love for one another.

a forgotten classic

Not many people think of WILL PENNY when they think of the great westerns, but it certainly deserves to be remembered. A simple tale of an aging cowboy (Charlton Heston) being nursed back to health by a woman (Joan Hackett), and then having to protect her and her young son (Jon Gries, son of the director) from the slimy characters who left him to die, the film is headlined by a wonderful, understated performance from screen veteran Heston, undoubtedly one of his finest. Joan Hackett also gives a great, if somehow delicate, performance. Donald Pleasence is a delight as always as the sadistic Preacher Quint, and there's good support from Lee Majors (in his major film role), Anthony Zerbe and Ben Johnson (both of whom, sadly, never really get to do much), character actor Slim Pickens in a small role, and Bruce Dern in one of his countless villain parts. And Gries is good as the boy.

The cinematography is beautiful, especially once the story moves to the snow-covered terrain where much of the film plays out. A little slow at first, but the pacing soon picks up and moves nicely. My only complaint is that the film's score is at times overbearing and distracting, but not enough to ruin the enjoyment of the film. All together, a fine little gem of a movie that should be remembered if AFI ever does a 100 Greatest Westerns special.

Together, they prevent a raid on a shipment of money belonging to Blake. Darker sequel to "Spur des Falken"

"Weisse Wölfe" is the sequel to "Spur des Falken". The wife of Chief Weitspähender Falke (Gojko Mitic) is murdered by bandits. His search for revenge leads him to Tanglewood, a town which is under control of the bandits. Great performance again by Rolf Hoppe as the vicious Bashan, by the way! Sheriff Patterson and his wife hope to improve the situation. When the money of Sam Blake (convincing actor: Helmut Schreiber) is stolen by the bandits, it seems a few allies might unite, but they don't seem to have a real chance.

The dramatic music of the movie, often led by powerful brass instruments, does well to enhance its effect. The East German "Weisse Wölfe" tells its story in a much darker mood than contemporary Karl May films of the West German cinema, showing at the beginning how the natives are forced to go into reservations and struggle for survival, an attempt which seems doomed. It is difficult to say though how much it might be influenced by movies like John Ford's "Cheyenne Autumn".

Poor Luci, she is a 15 year old English schoolgirl about to embark on a promising career as the high-school mattress when she comes home one day from school to find her Mum as dead as a door knob in the tub. You see her Mum has cut her wrists after a long unrewarding career as the town mattress. Fortunately for Luci, her Mum's childhood friend is now a very successful upper-middle class doctor who has decided to take Luci home to his family (on a trial basis). Luci's new family (The Quayles) has a few issues. The father's libedo is on the wane and he has a stick permanently stuck up his butt. The mother was "convent schooled" and misses the good old days of snuggling up with a pretty young girl. The son is an amateur peeper without the libedo problem but also with a stick up his butt. Luci arrives in the midst of all this with her one suitcase, a bit unbalanced from her mother's recent suicide, and does everything she can to fit in with her new family - more or less. There isn't a ...

Luci in the earth without diamonds

Most of the films about "Swinging London' celebrated the joys and colors of the time. "Baby Love", while it was made during the heyday of "Swinging London", deals with the story of an adolescent girl called Luci, and London serves just a background for Luci and the other characters around her. The characters and their environment are portrayed with a documentary feel - they are shown in a realistic way.

Luci, one day, on returning home, finds her mother dead. A great shock! For Luci there are not many choices. Her future looms black. But her mother, before killing herself, had sent a letter to a doctor who in the past had been her lover, and where she asks him to take care of her daughter Luci. The doctor is now a married man with wife, son and maid

  • in short, a well-off family.

The doctor brings Luci (Linda Hayden, who was only 15 at the time) to his home. At first she seems just a bewildered, shy girl, but it won't take long till they discover other sides of Luci's personality.

Luci needs love and protection, and for her, love and sex are not very apart. She is manipulative (but not consciously so), yet she acts by instinct - she's a bundle of contradictions, a very complex character. She'll use her powers of seduction on all members of the family, everything is turned upside down and masks fall.

In some ways, "Baby Love" reminded me of "Teorema" by Pasolini, but while "Teorema" is a mystical-political parable, "Baby Love" has her feet on the ground.

The creativity linked to reality, the freedom of the camera, Luci's sensuality/sexuality (there are even some bits of nudity), the nonjudgemental way of showing the characters, make "Baby Love" a very interesting film. It's a pity though that (as far as I know) the only available copies have soft (a bit washed out) colors. Anyway the film is very watchable. Well worth checking out.

Watch Tell Me Lies Trailer :

Review :

This is a fine film.

This is a fine film. A drama-documentary, which takes a telling if narrow snapshot of London at the height of the Vietnam war. This is fascinating and useful insight into one section of British thinking. Coming as it does from the perspective of noted theatre director Peter Brooke and his band of Royal Shakespeare Company players, the views expressed here are authentically vexed, complex and multi-layered.

Many scenarios are authored and staged by Brooke and the cast which illustrate the diversity of anti-war opinion that existed among London's artistic and intellectual communities. However, this is no Swinging London post-card fantasy. The opinions expressed here are raw, heartfelt and honestly confused - much like the war itself.

One is left with the impression that those who occupied London's and indeed Britain's cultural high ground were feeling a sense of moral impotence and torment in the face of war's terrible realities. At the end of 'Tell Me Lies', the question of what price should be paid to fight a 'moral' conflict is left unanswered. Instead, we are left with a reminder that art and politics can offer no easy solutions to the legacy of war with its landscapes of broken bodies and destroyed lives.

Review :

A Thoroughly Cinematic Film

Bert Tenzer, a writer and a veteran of radio and television production and direction, could not, in fact, "write" the feature film he wanted to make in terms that, say, a studio story editor could grasp. Outline or dialog would bear no relationship to the ultimate movie; it has to be "written with film" rather than pen and paper. Having made "loot and plunder" and deeply concerned with the state of society in which he had made it, he could afford, with some fund-raising, to go out on his own to say what he wanted to say. After two years' work as writer-producer-director, "eight months of that devoted to editing—or 'writing'-the final film," for little less than $700,000, he came up with 2,000 Years Later, A major studio-Warner Brothers 7 Arts-could then "read" it and undertook its distribution.

2,000 Years Later is a "personal" film – and an interesting one at that. It still defies script outline because it is so thoroughly cinematic. It has distillations of La Dolce Vita, Dr. Strangelove, Mondo Cane, and The Savage Eye; it has a brilliant take-off on High Noon and the fast inter-cuts, repetitions and cinema verite inserts that are the hallmark of so many "now" films; it has Terry Thomas as the unctuously venal television host of an International Cultural Hour, and Edward Everrett Horton as his pretentiously intellectual co-host; it has Murray Roman as the ultimate motorcyclist, Superdude, and Monty Rock III as Tomorrow's Leader. For Plot it has the last decedent Roman brought by the gods to our time to warn against the imminent decline and fall. It has flashy and fascinating techniques (consider paralleling a television guest show with a bull fight- eh, toreros?) and a fast contemporary score.

But most important, it has a point of view and something to say and you will either get the message or hate every seemingly exploitative and relentless moment of the film. It's essentially a statement about the loot and the plunder and the universal sell-out, whether it's by the TV Boys, the super culture hounds, the rock idol who digs "love and peace and those boots" or the Superdude who trades in his "tradition" for the boodle. It's a ruthless film- that makes the faces of the customers at the topless discotheques more fascinating then the females, that looks fads and fashion in the fraud (with Rudi Gernreich), that explores a zap-pow jet-set party (only two actors in this one and the rest just folks who gladly let the cameras roll), devastates physical fitness programs, lets the military mind have free rein and peels the skin off the fast-buck society. It's not a comfortable film because it is a merger of conflicting elements and the eye of the beholder is all.

Irreverent, skirting the borders of taste, nose-thumbing and back stabbing, it hits at a number of today's shams and shambles. And if you get the message…. It, is Mr. Tenzer feels, almost a Rorschach test. I urge you to take it.

Goofy spaghetti western

One of the first spaghetti western comedies, it certainly has an enthusiastic cast, plenty of slapstick (some very impressive gymnastics, especially in the massive fight sequences), and an appropriately goofy tone. It does eventually outstay its welcome, and there are a surprising amount of brutal killings for what's supposed to be a comedy. Still better than a lot of the subsequent spaghetti western comedies to come.
