Bhola (Sunil Dutt) is a simple minded young man who has taken a vow to act according to the book of shashtras, which dictate that a man must marry when he is of the right age. He meets with lovely Bindu (Saira Banu) and falls head in love with her. Coincidentally, Bindu moves in next to his house. Bhola is thrilled, but soon despairs when he learns that Bindu has given her heart to Master Pillai (Mehmood). Bhola's friends Vidyapathi (Kishore Kumar), Banarasi (Mukri), and others belonging to an acting troupe, assist in hoodwinking Bindu to get attracted to Bhola, and thereby getting his love life back, but there are unexpected twists and turns, and Bhola's lies are exposed, making Bindu return to her plans to marry Master Pillai. Padosan

I have watched this movie quite a few times, but I think its one of the rare movies I tend to watch with equal enthusiasm every time. Although, it was a remake of a Tamil film "Adhutha Vittu Penn", I thought the Hindi version was EQUALLY amazing and not to mention immensely entertaining =) I thought performance-wise Kishore, STOLE THE SHOW! I cannot imagine the movie without him. The guy is incredible at comedy. Sunil Dutt was fabulous, I just adore him to bits, he is so underrated...he put in a stupendous performance! ROFL gotta love the scene where he attempts to learn music from Kishore...he had me in splits. As for Mehmood, he simply rocked. 'Daaaaaai' bhola . I liked his unique accent. haha. I think its imitated by plenty of actors till date and yes, its annoying to the core. Saira, well I usually find her very irritating in most of her films, I thought she was passable. The soundtrack was amazing. Ahhh...man I can just listen to them all day long. My personal favorites include kehna hai, mera samne wali ladki ne and main chali is one of best female duets sung by Asha and Lata. The movie is a must watch, it's a classic in every sense. Highly recommended! 9/10

Speedway (1968) **

SPEEDWAY is just another in the long line of '60s Elvis vehicles, and kind of lightweight at that. It takes awhile to go anywhere, but not that you go into these flicks expecting high art or anything. Presley is a kind-hearted race car driver who gets an unwelcome visit from tax investigator Nancy Sinatra, looking to nail him for unpaid dollars he's earned while racing around the track. Gale Gordon (Lucy's Mr. Mooney himself) is on hand as her no-nonsense boss. Elvis was actually pretty good at comedy, and he shares some funny moments with Bill Bixby, who plays his conniving manager/buddy. Two good songs this go-round are "Let Yourself Go" (sung by The King) and Nancy Sinatra's sexy rendition of "Your Groovy Self". ** out of ****

Poor Exploitation Of The Charles Vine Character

The main enticement to watch this obscure 1968 film is to see Tom Adams reprise the role of British secret agent Charles Vine (which he created in the 1965 film Second Best Secret Agent In the world. The latter was an amusing James Bond spoof and, on recent viewing, continues to hold up quite well despite the years. He repeated the role in Where Bullets Fly and thus this film represents the third and final film but I hesitate to say in the series. This film is largely made in Spain, with local talent and without the directors or writing talents of the earlier films.

Aside from those of us who want to say we watched all the Charles Vine films there isn't any real reason to see this movie. The plot is confusing, as with most James Bond type films, but not particularly interesting. The performances are flat, whether due to the Spanish actors in an English language film, or simply due to the script and budget. The latter largely limits the action scenes to fist fights and firing off guns. More importantly Tom Adams, without the wit of a script, simply comes off as stone faced and one dimensional.

For the record, the plot starts with the kidnaping of Russian ambassador Yevtushenko (Bernabe Barta Berri, the only actor with a glint in his eye and willing to have fun with the material) from a ship. Apparently the Russians are supposed to blame the British and vice versa. Actually its the Albanians (Major Kovacs played by Tim Barrett) in conjunction with the Chinese (Lycee played by Gene Reyes). British secret agent Charles Vine (Tom Adams) is called in to investigate. He tracks them down to a yacht and attempts to free Yevtushenko ensue before Vine is also captured and shipped off to Albania. There he is tempted by General Borodin (Antonio Molino Rojo) to defect to Albania. Naturally Borodin's assistant Galina (Diane Lorys) commits her body to convincing Vine. However, what Albanian girl can resist a British secret agent and, just as naturally, she joins Vine and Yevtushenko in escaping to the Greek border (pursued by a motley collection of Albanian tanks). I've left out a few sub-plots (i.e. poisoned darts, WW11 OSS agents left behind German line (don't ask!) and multiple females throwing themselves at Vine) but I don't think it makes much difference.

Technical credits were poor on the tape I obtained but, since I doubt this film ever had a commercial North American distribution, who knows the history of the original print. I should also note that this tape was advertised at 84 minutes runtime and the IMDB database lists an original runtime of 108 minutes.

Obviously the producers took an off-the-shelf spy script and tried to commercialize it by exploiting the Charles Vine character. However, without a script or dialog Tom Adams performance is strictly dead faced instead of deadpan.

typical of its time (late 60s/early 70s)

This is a typical action movie of the period revolving around a casino employee who is forced to do something wrong. I was In charge of motorcycle parts of film. It was never released in uk I managed to get a copy from production company in germany a few years ago but my german is not that good! (film dubed from english)I actualy appear in film for about 5-10 seconds but you have to be quick & have freeze frame.The london filming was done at the playboy club casino in parklane (no longer in existance)Hyde park,& Flask public house hampstead north london. some of night shots were done on river thames embankment opposite houses of parliment in daylight but with smoke generator to make it look like foggy london. good comedy action thriller.I rember the late Laurwence Harvey as a man who could talk & be with people of all types & backgrounds getting on ok with everybody.a man of the people I like him very much in the short time I knew him.

Perfect Spaghetti Western with a great cast

The second Western from Giuliano Carnimeo is a perfect production with a great cast. George Hilton and Walter Barnes are a perfect team and on the other side the great german actor Horst Frank. As Regina Loni von Friedl is also very good and insidious. Responsible for the good looking of the movie is Stelvio Massi with his camerawork. The movie has also a ironic sense of humor which is very good for it. Francesco de Masi did a great job with the wunderfull music. Giuliano Carnimeo and George Hilton made also a few other good movies together f.ex. the Giallo "Perché quelle strane gocce di sangue sul corpo di Jennifer?" or the western- comedy " Il West ti va stretto, amico ... è arrivato Alleluja". Carnimeo is also responsible for three of the Sartana- movies with Gianni Garko.

fun lowbrow European crime comedy featuring early Dustin Hoffman

This Spanish-Italian crime comedy is another Sidney Pink production (see my review of FICKLE FINGER OF FATE) and stars the young Dustin Hoffman as Jason Fister, a bumbling treasury agent who is assigned to a case in Rome because the people in his home office want to get rid of him. His task is to track down a million dollars stashed away by a former gangster turned insurance man, played by Cesar Romero whose role must take all of five minutes. Although this film was not released in the US until 1969, from reading producer Sid Pink's autobiography I got the impression that it was made right before THE GRADUATE. His performance here is very good--kind of like a more subdued Jerry Lewis (or is that a more subdued Sammy Petrillo?). Having his voice post-synchronized later hurts a bit, but Mr. Hoffman does his best, and I found the film to be a harmless yet enjoyable lowbrow comedy, not too different in feel from such Pink productions as FICKLE FINGER OF FATE or WITCH WITHOUT A BROOM. It's certainly more of a success than, say, Who is Harry Kellerman? or Dick Tracy (not to mention Ishtar!). Hoffman shows that even in this early point in his career he is entirely capable of carrying a film by himself. Mainstream audiences might be put off by the dubbing or the low-budget production quality, but if nothing else it proves that Mr. Hoffman can make a Franco and Ciccio movie as well as Franco and Ciccio could have done! The scene where Hoffman plays both Fister and his enforcer "Red" is priceless and could have come from a Harry Langdon short at Columbia or Educational--high praise coming from a Langdon fan such as myself! Now, if only Alfredo, Alfredo will come out on video in the USA...
